La chanson 'The Children's marching song" a été créée au théâtre, en 1958, par Ingrid Bergman et enregistrée par Mitch Miller pour le film "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" (1958). La chanson est dérivée de la chanson "This old man" enregistrée par Pete Seeger en 1953 à partir d'un air traditionnel de musique enfantine. La première adaptation françaises est celle des Compagnons de la Chanson sous le titre "Nick Nack Paddy Whack (la marche des gosses)" et reprise par Yvette Giraud, par Annie Cordy, Eddie Barclay ou la Chorale Fédérale du Scoutisme Français.
